Where chickens lay eggs
First, I must tell you a little bit about where I live -- on an old farm, with several outbuildings in various states of disrepair. Neither I nor my landlord have found time to get around to fixing them. One building in particular that sits right behind the house has 2 rooms plus a garage in it. The two rooms face the house, and one seems to have been a potting room -- at least by the layout of it. The door to that room had a panel missing from the bottom of it. Another building, about 100 feet from the house used to be a chicken coop. I have remodelled it to be an equipment shed. It has a gravel floor, two old Wheel Horse tractors and some other power equipment in there as well.
We had been noticing that a couple of our hens would be missing from time to time while they were foraging in the yard. I wondered if the building behind the house could be a possibility for them to be laying in when we couldn't find any eggs in their provided nest, any of the usual hangouts or a few secluded spots. So I sat outside and watched them one morning to figure it out. Sure enough, one of the hens jumped up on the door and went in through the missing panel! So I got up and went into the building and found her in the corner turning six eggs! I screwed a piece of tin over the door opening, threw her out and gathered the eggs.
Of course, six eggs isn't enough for three hens to have laid over a week, so we knew there had to be another spot in which they were laying. My wife saw another hen go to the equipment shed. She didn't immediately see where the hen was, so she waited, listening. She heard something move a bit behind an old Wheel Horse deck and slowly tilted it back to see. (Tilted S-L-O-W-L-Y, as we have wasps and wild critters from time to time). There she was, and she had ten eggs under her! So Lori (my wife) threw her off the nest and put her in the pen to lay. She (the hen) finally gave in and laid in the provided nest.
Moral of the story: Chickens will lay anywhere they feel safe to do so.
To break them of this habit, I'll have to put down some fake eggs for them to keep company. Otherwise, it will happen over and over.
My grandma had a hen that would lay her eggs only inside an empty tire..They are weird and wonderful creatures that are truely a pleasure to share our lives with.
