Where to buy chicks in ABQ, and what breed should I look for?

Sue, Farmer's feed store on 4th has a nice selection of baby chicks. They have some New Hampshire Reds, which seem to do well here in Albuquerque. They are good layers and good pets. They have Orphington chicks, too, and they are good layers and good pets, but need a little shade in the summer, but do great in the winter here. They have some week old Plymouth Rock, which are excellent layers and do great in our weather, but can peck. Hope this helps. Janet

Hi Sue, I had to chime in and cast my vote for Farmer's Feed on 4th street also. I bought 9 Wyandottes from them a month ago, all are doing fine. I special ordered mine so that I could get the number, breed and varieties that I wanted. Farmer's Feed is very helpful with advice, too. I believe my chicks actually came from Privett's in Portales, NM (they will not allow you to pick up chicks so don't go driving down there ;-) ) but if I had ordered directly from Privett, I would have had to order 25 minimum and that was too many. I'm in the East Mountains so I was looking for a cold hardy breed, good egg layers. I hope the site admin will not mind -- if so I apologize and I won't do it again if you tell me "stop that!" -- but there is a site called mypetchicken.com that has a very good tool for deciding what breeds would be most appropriate to your situation and wants. They have info on most of the breeds available and include things like whether the breed is docile or aggressive or high strung, whether the breed will be content confined to a backyard or needs a lot of room to roam about, also, whether or not they can withstand cold weather, what color eggs they lay and a lot of other helpful information.
