Wasted Feed

We have 6 chicks (3 are about 4 weeks old and 3 are about 2-1/2 weeks old), they are all healthy and growing well. We feed them a starter/grower crumble from our local CoOp. The problem is that when we clean their container we find about half of the food they have gone through from the feeder mixed into the bedding. Is this what we're going to have to just accept or is there a better way to feed them to reduce waste?
We have a feeder in their box 24/7 along with 2 waterers.

What kind of feeder do you use? Is it the kind that deters them from scratching their food all over the place?
Even some of those only work to an extent, as chicken really like to scratch. But they do cut down on the amount wasted.
It's the kind that has 8 or 10 holes in a circular plastic base with a removable plastic container above. The tend to push the food out of it with their beaks rather than scratching (though they do try).
We have noticed that if we put less feed in they waste less. They have started to scratch in the bedding more and eat what they pushed out of the feeder.
We're getting anxious to get them outside, but they're not quite old enough yet. Probably another 3 weeks.

Hi Ukukwi - I had a lot of feed wasted too untill I invested in a hanging feeder. I hung it high enough so that they could barely reach the bottom and I raise it as they grow. They scratch like crazy underneath it whan they eat, but the feed stays in the feeder! Jane
I did the same thing as Jane.... beside not wasting food, it also keeps the pine bedding I am using out of their food, as well as their water which I also replaced with a hanging waterer. As a plus, it also lasts a lot longer!
