I'd put the dog house under the lean to shed, and then build a basic frame and door covered with chicken wire on part of your lean to. That way you can utilize the existing roof of the lean to, and use minimal carpentry skills.

Also, a kitty litter box with lid, filled with straw, makes an easy lay box. Although a dryer lay box would look neat.

i am looking to have 4-6 chickens, but live in massachusetts where we have frigid winters. i also have limited building skills and limited space as we live in a small city.
i had chickens when i lived in new mexico and it did snow there we built a straw bale coop that was just straw bales staked with a roof on it with plenty of ventilation. the chickens did great. so my question is, is it possible to have a similar set up with out heaters here? or what do you suggest.

I raised chickens in southwestern NH for quite a while. I never had any heat, or even a light bulb (which some people use for heating), in my coop. I made sure they had water (switched the ice block for fresh water every morning) and plenty of food. They roosted pretty high off the coop floor (I set my roosts at about 4-5 feet) and I never had any problem. Some people invest in heaters for the watering containers, but since they don't drink at night anyway, I just made sure they had fresh, warm water every morning, and if it was really cold and I was home before dark, I'd switch the ice for water again in the afternoon. Had to collect the eggs, anyway, so they wouldn't freeze! I did have a lot of windows in my coop- so that provided some passive solar heat- but no insulation! So it was probably even colder at night! In my experience, NH was usually colder than Mass. by a few degrees at least!

I do the same thing, here in Michigan.  Mine do fine.  Just pick winter hardy breeds.  Mine are laying still, even with cold and no extra lights.
