What Kind of People Keep Chickens in Their Backyard?

What kind of people indeed? I don’t think we ever imagined ourselves as the kind of people who would start exploring the world of urban sustainable living. And then we had kids. Lots of kids. Five of them, actually. And grocery store runs started to add up to a big chunk of our budget. And one of those kids got older and started bugging us about the environment, and going green, and recycling...

We already ate 90% organic and as gas prices climbed, the sticker shock set in. So, it crept up on us. We started making our own bread. We put in a couple of larger-than-normal gardens. And, naturally, the next idea came in the form of chickens. We’d cut down our bread and produce costs, but still paid $4.00 or more a week for eggs (because lots of kids eat lots of eggs). Brainiacs that we are... we knew where eggs came from. Somehow, chickens became the next logical step.
