Socializing a new hen
I'm trying to introduce a young hen to my current flock of 3 hens. The current dimensions of the coop is 15 x 2.5 which is completely enclosed. Attached to the coop is a hen house (a rabbit hutch) with a ramp that leads into the coop. With the current setup, the hens are constantly in each others faces therefore the pecking order and dominance is quickly established. Our new hen (an araucana) has its feathers but is still chirping. I've been introducing the young hen (Dalila) to each other hen OUTSIDE of the coop and they seem to get along ok, the dominant hen Penny still pushed Dalila a little but not much. Once I introduced Dalila into the coop, Penny got territorial and the other hens reacted by attacking Dalila too. They seem to feed off the fear that Dalila exhibits when Penny attacks her. When Penny is out of the coop, the hens seem to be much more relaxed and are not as aggressive towards Dalila. The only solutions I thought of so far are to either wait for Dalila to get older (she currently lives in a large pet kennel carrier) and introduce her where she can better stand up for herself (she may adapt to the flock much quicker) or to put Penny in the kennel for a month or so while Dalila gets comfortable with the other two hens. Another thought would be to put Dalila and Penny in the kennel together for a week or two since it is a neutral environment and monitor their behavior. Any thoughts on this?

We introduced hens by putting them in a smaller coop inside out big run area. This way they could see each other through the chicken wire, but they still fought a bit once fully introduced. Now they snuggle together at night, and peck side by side during the day.
I'd wait till she gets older, especially because you are introducing one bird to a flock. If you were introducing 2 or 3 the aggressive behavior would be more spread out. Your one hen may not get a break.
Also, make sure she can have a perch to jump up onto to get away from the other birds once you introduce them.
