Noob in the city

Another newcomer to urban chickening. I live in Brooklyn, NY now but I'm about to move to the SF bay area and hope to raise some chickens there. I'm also planning to rent, not buy (or at least not just yet) a home. So I'm hoping someone (extra points if you know about Oakland and/or Berkeley) has advice for a renter wanting to raise some hens. Should I bother asking/telling the landlord? Are there particular neighborhoods that are especially friendly to chickens? Anything else I should be aware of?
I already checked the ordinances page; I'm more curious about the more subjective pieces of the process. Thanks!
