Hey chicken lovers! I bought 3 lovely Maran hens last week and they are all feeding well and seem to be lively enough. One of these lovely ladies seems to have a tan brown stool, it looks loose but i wouldnt say it was diarroeha. I am giving them the same food the supplier was feeding them on and everything was new and clean. The hens are 17wks old. Does anybody know wwhat may be causing this ? Should i be concerned? Many thanks.Wink

Chickens have more going on in their little heads, than folks think. This could just be the change in surroundings and people. It could be a trama of being in a new cage, for awhile before you bought her and it could be a change in diet, although you think you're feeding the exact diet. It's possible she was getting more grass or greens, etc, than you realize. As long as the eyes are clear, the comb is stout and plump(standing and firm), and the feathers are still shiny, she's probably ok, just an upset. I'd suggest sitting with her. Yup, I said sitting. She needs to get to know you, just like a new puppy. Just because they don't wag a tail, lick your hand or whimper, doesn't mean they don't have feelings and a whole set of individual nervous twitches. I know this sounds crazy, all sorts of folks think I'm weird but I guarantee, my hens compete with each other to lay bigger and bigger eggs, wanting more and more attention and praise for them. I guess I'm the chicken whisperer. haha

I have one, maybe two hens with the slimy, extra stinky brown stool. Otherwise they seem perfectly healthy: eating well, glossy feathers, clear eyes, alert and active. I've had this young flock for two weeks but the issue has not spread, so I'm just keeping an eye on them and chalking it up to an adjustment to a new home and new feeding patterns.
