After the hatching of my six wonderful girls (2 RIR, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Buff Orpingtons) in late July, I had settled my mind that they weren't going to produce eggs until after winter was over. I put a white heat lamp bulb in the lamp and set a timer so it would go on from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. on the off chance it might fool them into laying in the winter. SUCCESS!
On Christmas Eve, as I was getting ready to leave town for the holiday, I went out and looked in the coop for giggles and found the two most beautiful, brown, shiny, clean eggs you've ever seen! I came back on the 27th to find 5 more in the coop. I've been consistently getting them daily and today was up to a new high of 4. I checked the girls feet to see which were bleaching out in color, but can't be certain yet.
It sure is a good feeling going out and collecting the eggs every day and when I filled the first dozen carton and was so proud of it, my husband reminded me (such a wise acre) that I only spent $1000 over the year to get that dozen eggs. :-\
