I'm a watchmaker-in-training with a hunger for self-sustained living. I have a rather well established garden, and I've raised several dogs, countless cats, rabbits, and one ornery fox. I'm very busy with my studies and work, but I've found that I do still possess the time to care for all my living things. My next goal is to raise my own egg-layers once I'm set up in my new house. As much as I've read on caring for chickens, the main question on my mind has yet to be answered, and I was hoping that someone here could answer it for me: How much time could you estimate you spend tending your brood? If anyone could give me something of a break-down of their daily schedule with their flock, I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you for your time, and for keeping such a lost tradition alive.

Welcome!
It's a minimal time investment daily, although there are times when you have to put in a little more time, such as for coop maintenance, cleaning, if a bird gets sick, etc. But generally speaking you need to feed/water daily, and collect eggs. Spending time with your birds, and picking them up is also important. It allows them to bond with you, and you can give them the once over to make sure they are healthy.

I spend about 10 minutes in the am to feed, water, and collect. I also make time during the day or evening to hang out with them, depending on my schedule.
