Does the deep litter method work?

I've never done it myself, but I've read many success stories online of others who have, and I'm thinking about doing it next winter as it adds heat to the coop from the material composting.

The goat lady here in NM said no for deep litter for chickens...

scouty_d, can you tell us why the goat lady said no? I'm interested in this topic too. My mother used to leave the poop in the coop during the winter because it really did help add warmth - important in Colorado when it gets to -15 degrees F.

I use the deep litter method with a twist. I use DE (diamatauseus earth) I get it from my local elevator. Its mixed with clay, Its in a powder form. You buy it in 50 lb bags. Its used for cleaning stalls. Anyway its pretty cheep, you don't need to use much either. I sprinkle it inside the coop once a month then stir up all the bedding Then I add another bag of pine shavings to the top. The DE neutralizes the smell, dries out the poop and aids in the breakdown of the poop faster. There by adding more warmth to the coop. Our coop bottom is 4x8 and we have 9 girls. You obviously would have to adjust to your needs. I started this in November with a totally clean coop, and do not plan on doing a through cleaning again untill spring. I also use the DE in their run every few months. My chickens are pretty much free range . We are on 2/3 acre that is fenced. Our closest neighbors backdoor is about 30 feet from the coop. They have NEVER smelled them. If you cant find the DE at your elevator check it out online. Its really pretty cool stuff. Unrelated to the coop. We tried to add two chickens to our existing flock one was accepted but after 8 days one was attacked. I found her corned in tho coop missing lots of feathers and a inch and a half bloody deep hole in her back. I was so worried about infection. I called the elevator, he said use the DE. So we flushed the wound and packed it with the DE. Her back healed wonderfully and is starting to sprout feathers. Of course shes still living in the house because the girls are mean to her. But we love her. She thinks shes one of the dogs now. :)   By the way we live in Michigan, its cold here.
