Do rats kill chickens?

Sadly we found one of our Plymouth Rocks, Sunny, had been attacked on the head and had to be put out of her misery. She had somehow gotten locked in the outside portion of the coop overnight. The next night we saw a rat inside the coop. Has anyone heard of rats killing chickens? I think we have quite a few around. Anyone know of a way to kill rats w/o poison?

I've not heard of a rat _killing_ a chicken, but I do know they will gnaw on one if the chicken is sleeping. Of course they only get one bite usually. Mostly they will go after young chicks when they are in the mood for meat and some are nearby.
Rats are attracted to the chickens' feed mostly. This includes what's in the feeder, what's in the feed bag, and any spilled feed on the ground. You can't help the spilled feed - the chickens do it as a matter of feeding. What's in the feed bag should be removed to a rodent-proof metal container, and what's in the feeder can't be helped.
The best cheap defense to retrofit to your existing run/coop is 1/2" mesh, galvanized hardware cloth. Get it in either a 3' or 4' width and bury it 1' down next to everything. Then fasten it to your existing fencing & coop. The depth will discourage digging under & give protection from dogs that like to push under a fence. The height will stop all but the most determined climbers from getting in there.
The best free defense to retrofit is to use free/recycled tin installed as above. It's free if you have it laying around or can get it from a building site w/permission. If there are any home recycling centers in your area, ones that specialize in recycling building materials, you may be able to get it fairly cheap there. And if your run isn't too big, of course it's available at your local home improvement store.
If you want to get really evil on them, get a solar fence charger & put a run of wire 4" off the ground, and another run at the top of the mesh, or 3' off the ground. Fort Bok Bok is now fully operational!
Hi, we seem to be having a bit of a rat plague on this side of the ocean as well. I have just read that plaster of paris mixed with flour and cocoa will give rats terminal constipation, I havent tried it yet but I will as I dont like to put poison down. We tried half filling a bucket with water and smearing a line of peanut butter just above the water, the idea being that the rats will over-balance and fall in. Our rats must have good balance because it didnt work. Rats are cunning things and I wouldnt be at all surprised to find that they attack hens.
