Crowing Roosters
Been a while since I visited this site, so an update. Unlike a lot of places, my town, San Angelo, Texas is pretty open to chickens and other small livetock, having only a 100 foot rule as to distance from the neighbor. Good rule, in fact for hens that could be cut in half and never be a nuisance.
My problem was, I have a neighbor who thinks a quarter acre lot in town is a good site for raising fighting cocks. he has 15-20 such gamecocks in his back yard next door. These are birds born and bred to kill one another on sight for the pleasure and gambling of human (to use the term loosely) spectators. They have to be housed in individual pens or tethered lest they kill one another for no profit. In their frustration at being unable to slaughter one another, they engage in crowing contests: ALL THE TIME! Midnight to dawn seems to be a particularly favored time for said birds
It has taken me since August 2009 to get it done, but next month San Angelo ordinance will almost assuredly change to allow only a single adult rooster per property/flock. This will allow self-sustaining flocks and allow me to sleep at 3:00AM. A single rooster will crow, I can live with that, but the incessant racket of 15 or so taking turns symphonically is too much.
anybody dealing with that side of the chicken issue? BTW, I'm a big supporter of urban chickens, the eggs beat supermart all hollow and plucking Sunday dinner was a custom in my Grandmother's house.

Just an update; it's now official, last Monday Council approved going forward with my version of ordinance amendment, ie, one mature rooster per property. I caution readers: if you move through the process first, learn the process of amendment your city uses; then assume nothing and stay on top of it! I got crosswise with our Animal Control Director and there was a last-minute attempt from her office to slip through a watered down bit of fluff. I was there to comment, AND I had made a point of visiting each of the Council members personally. She never stood a chance, my version prevailed unanimously, but it was because I had done my homework. She hadn't and looked foolish. Then for fun, I made a public show of shaking her hand and thanking her for her (non-existent) help! One hint; I was amazed at how much city info one can get at 3:00AM online in bathrobe and slippers. See what your city offers.
