Continuous pecking on newcomer hens
My main flock of four hens are still terrorizing the two newcomer hens after 3 weeks. The bantam rooster doesn't bother them. The two fly up to the top outside roost in the morning and generally stay on the roost all day. When evening comes, although they go into the henhouse, they usually sit in the nest box and huddle to hide their heads. The other hens ofter sit up on the nest box bar and peck the two. I noticed the two newcomers are very hungry and thirsty because I have to handfeed and water them before bed.
If I let the flock and the two hens free range in the yard, the main flock still keep the two away from the food/water trays I have put out for them. I have to stand by in order for the two to get something to eat/drink.
Question: Having noted how vicious chickens can be, should I keep them separated permanently? Or should I just let them in with the main flock and let them hash out their differences? I noted in the initial week, one hen did draw blood on one of the newcomers but have not seen any since. Just chasing and squawking alot.
I'm new to chickens so this behavior is I am sure stressful and frustrating. Thanks.
