Urban chicken keeping legalized in Ft. Collins!
Thanks to the hard work of Dan Brown and other Ft. Collins chicken supporters, residents of the city will now be allowed to keep hens in residential backyards. The city council passed the ordinance 5 to 1, which allows up to 6 hens per household. Roosters and slaughtering are not permitted, and hens must be housed 15 feet from your property line.
Check out the Ft. Collins Urban Hens site for information on the process involved in getting the ordinanced passed.
I had provided Dan Brown and the city council with a supporting letter, as well as a research paper that I wrote which evaluated 25 urban chicken ordinances. He wrote today to thank me for my efforts, and said that my paper really helped in the ordinance forming process. I plan to post my research paper somewhere on the site when I can figure out how to put up a pdf. Until then, if anyone would like a copy, please contact me at kt@urbanchickens.org.
YEAH!!!

Hi Dan. We are looking to do a story on fox31 about urban chickens. I've read past articles on your success. Anything new on the urban chicken front?

We were recently spotlighted in the Greeley Tribune article "Chicken Out". Well as we expected city code enforcement is telling us we can have only 1 chicken. We are setting out to fight this and get the rules changed similar to what was recently done in Ft Collins.
Our email address is bckauffman@comcast.net and our website is www.lifetransplanet.com. I'll be checking here for resources and information. Anyone interested in assisting the city of Greeley please contact us! This is my first reach out, expect to see more.
