Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

Josh Elliott, a photographer from Portland, Oregon, has a new photo blog called Three Chicks a Day. Through daily photographs, he chronicles how his baby chicks grow up to big chickens.

His photos are gorgeous and very well done, and they provide a great to see with the growth stages of chickens.

And best of all are his chicken's names: Salad Sandwich, Pot Pie, and Noodle Soup.  Here at our flock we had an Omelet, and now we have a Frittata and a Benedict, among other chickens with non-food names.

Thanks for your blog Josh, and the great photographs!

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

Three Chicks a day is a great commentary! Thanks. . . My own 3, Peep (Americauna), Red (Rhode Island) and Blue (Plymoth) are 10 days old today and growing. . . Peep, in fact, is quite a bit bigger than the other two, and a real "showoff" to boot. She has figured out how to use her wings to get her up and down from the roost, and is quick to show off by using this new skill whenever anyone comes to look at them. Blue is the morst timid one of the group, and Red is a bit standoffish. So, I have a question, at what age do you start "handling" them? Mine are in an outdoor coop with heat lamp, etc. I will be building a "run" for them soon. I am worried about "scareing them" with too much handling at this point, but do want them to be pets. . . any advise is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

You're not handling them yet?!?
I've made a point to handle them several times a day from the day they came home.

And KT, there's two 't's on my name.
Thanks for the mad props.

Josh

Sounds to me like you've got yourself a great family of chickens, I would not be too concered about over-handeling, best to get them used to you & all the family & pets as well. Dogs and cats can be very protective of your chicks if introduced carefully at a young age.
Good Luck, Captnjack

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

Thanks, I do handle them daily, as well as just sit by the coop and talk / sing to them. . . they will come over to me, and especially to my Collie, who thinks he is their "mother", but when I put my hand in the coop, they freak out. I have had to "catch" each of them several times, for minor health checks. all are doing well and growing well (they will be 2 weeks old tomorrow). I have no indoor space that is suitable to just let them "hang out" with me, and they are too small to be let loose in the yard. When I pick them up, I cradle them and rub their heads, which seems to have a calming influence. . . do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, Carol

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

I am overwhelmed at your photography. Sometimes you mention out of focus -- forget it, the pictures are perfect just as they are. They look like watercolors at times. You, to me, are world class. I work for My Pet Chicken and have a few birds myself. You better believe the next batch of birds I get I will be photographing them. You can't imagine how much time I have spent going over your pictures. I love the birds, all of them, yours, mine and even the ones that haven't hatched yet. But your photography has opened up a whole new line of fascination for me. I know birds and I know the camera. I just wonder what I can do? You are something else Josh. You have brought me incredible pleasure, and inspiration.

You got some great shots of those chicks. Haven't been handling mine very much, maybe I should more often. My little flock lost a member yesterday. Scar-face, she always had a crooked beak and never ate as much as the others, she finally died, just couldn't get enough food down I guess. The other 4 and our duck are all growing and doing great. If I can figure out my wifes digital camera, I'll get some pics up here of them.

You could foster. Give the beastie back before you gotta go out of town. Not as bad as it sounds! Some of those places need foster keepers. Don’t know about SPCA-Chalbermarle http://wiwapia.com/en/SPCA . Well, it does sound impossible actually

These photos are amazing. The city is really coming down on Urban Chickens where I live. Photos like this serve as great P.R. for the movement.

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

Great post. It is very educational to see how the chicks grow overtime.

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

This is a very nice photo set, not only is it nice for adults, but could also be used as an educational piece in the classroom.

Re: Photo blog of how chicks grow over time

I love how the chickens are flapping their wings in the pictures. I wonder how he made it look like they were photographed in a white room.
