I'm Teaching my First Chicken Keeping 101 Class
My friend Anna up in Denver sent me a link to a news story/video clip on a chicken keeping class that was just held in Denver. The class was popular as 50 people had showed up for the 30 slots offered. Chicken keeping classes are really gaining in popularity!
I am gearing up here in Albuquerque to teach my first chicken keeping 101 class on May 10th. I have advertised online, and I have tabled at a few events including the Co-op Earth Day Festival. There are currently over 30 people signed up, and I am really excited to see such an interest here in Albuquerque.
I am teaching this free class in my backyard so it can be a "hands on" chicken keeping lesson. I plan on covering all the basics and will use my coop, chicken tractor, brooder, feed, incubator, and chicks/chickens to teach the class. We will even do a wing clipping demo!
I am by no means an "expert" on chicken keeping, but I know how to do it and want to pass that knowledge on to people in my community. I've also invited other chicken keepers to attend, so that it can be community taught with a variety of ideas offered. The class is really casual by design with a 20 minute presentation and plenty of time for Q and A, discussions, coop exploration, and a few demos.
I challenge more people out there to share their knowledge and host a chicken keeping class. There is really not much to it- especially if you have been doing it for a while. Just get some people together who want to learn and show them how you raise chickens. You don't need to be an "expert" and know the answer to every question you get asked- just teach by example.
