I Need Quotes from Urban Chicken Keepers

I am taking a land use and zoning class this semester for graduate school- and of course my semester research project is on urban chicken ordinances.

I wanted to include some quotes from urban chicken keepers- quotes about how keeping chickens benefits your quality of life, why you do it, etc. It will help to bring more of a personal side to the paper, rather than it just being a technical paper.

On the same token, I am also looking for quotes from people who oppose urban chickens, as I will be presenting both sides in my paper.

Which ever your perspective, you can post a quote below in the comments section, or email it to kt@urbanchickens.org. Be sure to just include your city (names are not necessary).

Thanks!

Re: I Need Quotes from Urban Chicken Keepers

I am an owner of 3 chickens. My 2 older ones are Americana's (they lay green eggs) and 1 young unknown farm hen (she has not layed an egg yet). I had to build a duplex for my hens. The 2 americanas live in the upstairs and the young one lives alone in the bottom one. They each have their own fenced in yard. They have to be apart because my young one is different. She froze her feet off this winter when she got in a fight with a cat, the cat won. She was unable to get up on her roost so she slept in the snow and lost her feet. Her name is Peg Legs because she walks on two nubs of her legs. Chichens are very mean; they will peck at any one who is different until they are dead. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me. I live in Madison WI. --- Melinda

So...your chicken really has no feet? Does she get around ok? Do you have a picture?

Thanks for the comment!

Re: I Need Quotes from Urban Chicken Keepers

I have four chickens - I got them for the eggs, for local food, sustainability etc. But who knew what sweet pets they would be. They eat my table scraps, compost, give me fertilizer for the garden and fresh eggs, they make happy sweet sounds when I step into the backyard, they love nothing better then to be in the garden with me scratching around in any freshly turned dirt.

Re: I Need Quotes from Urban Chicken Keepers

I am in my first year of raising chickens. Started with 14 pullets, reduced to 1 (Luckee)thanks to family dog. Husband made coop, fence for side yard, and any alterations I asked him to do. Ordered 10 more thru the mail, 5 different kind, some rare. I love my chickens! They are fun, fun to watch, some are sociable, some are aloof. They have been laying for about 4 months now. Many coworkers and friends "scramble" to obtain eggs from us. Its lovely to see a carton of assorted colors of eggs: white, green, brown, and tan. Recently got 9 more baby chicks from the feed store. (Couldn't resist!) 4 more different kinds. They are about 6 weeks old. They stay in a different part of the coop separate from the older hens. It has come about that one of them is a rooster. I will probably not keep him as my experience with roosters reveals a nasty side to them. (Attacks when your back is turned and mean to the "ladies") Willing to see how his personality developes.
Having moved to a rural area from the city I am living a dream. I planted fruit trees, a huge garden and have been using chicken "litter" to compost.
Some are vocal, some are nosy (curious), some are skittish, some live to eat, they dig holes to stay cool, and come a running when they see you. This is the thing that always brings a smile to my face. They remind me of ladies in prairie skirts running towards me to see what I've brought them. They are very little work for the amount of enjoyment.
