"Chicken School" in the State of Delaware

coop in winterWant to learn about winterizing you coop, winter poultry diseases, or proper coop ventilation? If you live in or near the State of Delaware, then you are in luck. These topics and more will be presented in both Kent and Newcastle counties this December at the Small Flock Education Series, organized by Dr. Brigid McCrea, small flock speacialist at Delaware State University. Her announcement is below, and be sure to check out the attached agenda and brochure for details. (Wish I did not live so far away!)

Attention all fans of poultry! You are invited to attend our FREE chicken school this December! Our Small Flock Education Series or “chicken school” will be held every 2 months for the next year. Getting ready for winter? Well this December agenda is just for you! We will begin our chick network at this meeting in December. Everyone understands that getting the chickens you want in the quantities you want can be difficult. So this network is aimed at helping you connect with others to meet the minimum order requirements for on-line hatcheries. Thinking about chicks in the springtime--then join us to learn about incubation and brooding (join our chick network at that time too!). Also, there will be representatives from local feed stores present to assist you with ordering chicks directly. There will also be prizes for the best-dressed holiday chicken so bring your photographs!

Kind regards,

Brigid McCrea

Re: "Chicken School" in the State of Delaware

My experience with a 'small flock' in my backyard in north Wilmington, Delaware, around 2000 was not pleasant! I had raised 1 day olds (hens) every Spring and then would drive them out to my father's farm in Illinois in June to live. One Spring, I just couldn't part with this gorgeous flock of black and white brahma's.They were not visible to the neighbors, nor noisy (except when announcing they'd laid an egg!), and their indoor/outdoor pens were immaculate. The neighbors still had a fit, reported us to the County, who came to the door and told us we would be fined $1000/day until we found them new homes! Have the laws changed???

Re: "Chicken School" in the State of Delaware

one of my chickens is limping; how do i find out whats wrong with her?

Re: "Chicken School" in the State of Delaware

To the reply above: This blog post is not the appropriate place to post your question. Please post to the forum under chicken care. Start a new forum topic that says "limping chicken".

Also, give more details. Is there a physical injury that you can see, other changes in behavior, etc?

Re: "Chicken School" in the State of Delaware

That's a shame. I live in North Wilmington, too, and am working on getting a few chickens. My zoning is okay, but our property size is .08 acre too small. Considering going before the Board of Adjustments to get an okay. And our neighbors will need to be okay with it.

lol... a chicken school? Thought it appears odd at first but it is an excellent idea. There should be more of these to educate us pet owners.
