Beware of Dogs
As it turns out, dogs and chickens don't like each other. Hoping to save other chickens, I'll tell Jerry's story. On June 10, I received 4 month old chickens as a gift. I loved them and grew attached to them. And then disaster struck. Exactly a week later, June 17, I went outside to find that my chickens were gone. Franticly, I searched until I found three of them in the woods nearby. I searched for over an hour trying to find the missing pullet. But it was hopeless, as I could not find her. So I bought 6 foot tall chicken wire to make an enclosure for my chickens. But when I returned I found a stray dog covered in blood. After feeding the dog, a terrible thought occured, and I raced to my chickens. But they were all chased off by the dog. Only little Jerry, a cockerel, survived. He wandered out of the woods, scared half to death. To protect Jerry, (after calling animal control) I built an enclosure for him. I thought he was safe, but another dog came and pushed through the bottom of the fence and killed Jerry. The moral of this story is BUILD A SAFE ENCLOSURE WITH A ROOF AND A WOODEN OR CONCRETE BASE BEFORE YOU MOVE YOUR CHICKS OUTSIDE. It's too late for my chickens, but not for yours!
I'm sorry for your loss. I too, lost 5 full grown hens that were laying, last year. I had noticed that the fence was a little loose at the bottom. While I was gone one afternoon, our smallest dog, a rat terrier,got in the pen and killed all five. Needless to say, this year our pen is dog proof, all she can do now is plot, but she can't get in. We have a mixed brood of 13 this year and they are happy and safe. As you have noted, under the fence is the easiest way for the dogs to get in.
I have 4 dogs and 3 of them would just love to eat all of my girls if i let them i found though that an easy deturant for them is to burry the chicken wire that your using for your fence atleast a foot deep(ive found my dogs loose hope after about 6 inches) and then taking a board of ply wood and cutting it to be about a foot and a half and place that around the base. i found my dogs lost alot of intrest when they couldnt sniff and scratch at them threw the fence
Yes I did it too. Mrs. Anderson down the road has chickens and as she free ranges her chickens with no predator problems. I free ranged mine as well. I kept them secure in their little coop for 6 weeks, then opened up their door and allowed them to waunder. At 9weeks old a Chihuahua pack killed 6 of them in 1day. I never thought I would have a problem. The dogs live closer to Mrs. Anderson.

I have a rat terrior mix who can get over/under/around any fence. Do you folks think I have a chance of keeping chickens? I envision them scratching all around the property. I don't think I'd want to do it if I had to keep them enclosed all the time.
I consulted my friend, an experienced chicken keeper, who recommended electric fencing that comes in the form of netting. There's some thinkiong involved with setting it up, and it's not beautiful, but it will keep dogs out for sure, she said. Then I could devote a big part of the yard to chickens and keep dogs and coyotes/racoons/opossums, etc. out. Hmmm
Where I have my chickens there is lots of wild dogs.. The best way to protect your chickens I found was by buying a electric net.
