Hello everyone! free chickens!!! in Albuquerque!
Here's the catch. You must take all 4. There are 3 laying hens and one rooster. You must have some way of housing them and transporting them. My coop and other chicken stuff have already been promised to a friend.
My fiance and I raised these birds from chicks that were obtained locally. We have had them for just about a year. There are two black bantam hens (don't know breed), bought from a local family, one full-sized english game hen and a loud and feisty rooster that is a cross between an english game and a white leghorn (i think). The 2 english games were "rescued" from a yard where they were possibly raising for cockfighting. All are healthy but look a little ratty right now. I'm getting 1-2 eggs per day from this group. The bantam eggs are a little small but all of the eggs taste great!
Why are we stopping? Two reasons. We just moved to a house in a more crowded part of the valley and now with the windows open at night, we are noticing the rooster is quite loud and we are concerned about noise (he'd make a good constestant for the state fair crowing contest). No complaints to our faces but we have overheard complaints by neighbors to other neighbors. The other reason is my fiance hates the fact that the birds have to stay confined in the cages we have set up (there is plenty of room for them to scratch, etc.). She envisioned them roaming around the yard like we have seen in other parts of town. However we have had 2 dog-related tragedies and that is too much to bear. So rather than balance confinement and safety vs freedom and risk, we have chosen to give up for now. I'll be sad to see them go but we enjoyed raising them and will try again someday...

Good luck. I wish I could take them. I have come to this site in tears after having found out that my 5 girls are being jailed at our local SPCA with clipped wings after being picked up by animal control when a nosey, whiste-blowing neighbor called. I am absolutely heartbroken. They were missing for a couple of days so I decided to try my luck and call the SPCA, and was shocked (and relieved to learn they were alive)that they were actually there. After inquiring about getting them back, I was told due to town ordinances that require 2 acres of land for chickens, and my development's association rules, I am not allowed to get them. I hope you find a home for them before your neighbors do something similar. Like you, it is important to me to know that they will be together- they stuck together like glue all the time and became very anxious when separated at all. Unfortunatley, they said they could not guarentee they would end up together:(

Horses, cows, sheep and goats are allowed on lots of at least one half-acre in size, provided there is sufficient open space for each animal. According to ABQ Code of Ordinances, chapter 9, article 2, part 4, § 9-2-4-3, c-3:
"The Poultry limit is 15. No Person shall have more than one rooster in a household."
§ 9-2-4-7 ANIMAL NOISE:
"No person shall allow an Animal to persistently or continuously bark, howl or make noise common to its species to the extent that it causes a nuisance or as otherwise prohibited by this Chapter".
